Born in Tirgu Mures in Roumania (1968), Mária Kovalszki became a pupil at the Budapest Liszt Academy of Music in the institution's "class of exceptional talents" at the age of ten. Her professors were Klára Máthé and László Baranyay. She participated in numerous master-classes (György Sebők, Tamás Vásáry, Dmitry Bashkirov, András Schiff, Péter Frankl, etc.). In 1989 she won first prize at the Budapest Leó Weiner Chamber Music Competition. Her repertoire comprises the music of different ages from baroque to contemporary music. She now teaches at the Liszt Academy, and is a much sought-after chamber musician, and a regular performer in Europe, USA and Japan. She has been invited to the Tibor Varga Festival in Sion, the Pablo Casals Festival in Kronberg, as well as to the summer festivals of Bergamo, Semmering and Keszthely.
She was honored with the Ferenc Liszt-prize in 2018.
