Organist and composer Zsigmond Szathmáry, born in Hódmezővásárhely in 1939, has lived abroad for decades. He studied at the Ferenc Liszt College of Music in Budapest, then in Vienna and Frankfurt. In 1960 he won 1st prize in the Budapest International Organ Competition. He has lived in Germany since the 1970s. His repertoire includes both classical and avant-garde works: besides performing contemporary music he is also recognised for his interpretations of Bach and Liszt compositions. Since 1978 he has been professor of the Freiburg College of Music, a regular guest teacher at the Osaka University of Arts and holds master courses at the Summer Organ Academy in Haarlem, Holland. His own compositions are marked by bold experimentation and he also makes frequent use of electroacoustic means.
